Should I Interrupt My Teacher?

A New Picture Book for the Classroom

If you’re an elementary teacher, you’ve probably experienced this more than once:

You’re working with a student, teaching a small group, or talking to another adult when suddenly you hear…

“Excuse me!”

Sometimes it really is an emergency.

And sometimes…someone just needs to tell you that their cat’s birthday is tomorrow. 😊

That’s exactly what inspired my new picture book, Should I Interrupt My Teacher?

Is It Important, or Can It Wait?

Young children are still learning how to decide what is important enough to interrupt an adult. To them, an untied shoe, a broken glue stick, an annoying fly, and a real emergency can all feel equally urgent!

Should I Interrupt My Teacher? helps children learn to stop and think before interrupting.

Throughout the story, students are introduced to situations that help them think about questions like:

  • Is someone hurt?
  • Is someone in danger?
  • Is this an emergency?
  • Is this important?
  • Can this wait until my teacher is finished?
  • Can I solve this problem by myself?

The goal isn’t to teach children that they should never interrupt. There are absolutely times when we want our students to speak up right away! Instead, the book helps children begin to understand the difference between something that needs immediate attention and something that can wait.

A Great Beginning-of-the-Year Read Aloud

This book is a great addition to your beginning-of-the-year classroom management lessons, especially when you are teaching routines and expectations.

It can also be pulled out again during the year when your class needs a little reminder about interrupting!

After reading, you can talk with students about different classroom situations and have them decide:

Should I interrupt my teacher, or can it wait?

You can also create your own examples based on situations that happen in your classroom. Your students will probably have plenty of ideas, too!
