Word Chaining or Word Ladders are perfect for teaching phonics through spelling. Aligns with the Science of Reading. this resource consists of 47 Word Ladders or Word Chains with extras like sound boxes and a printable for students to write the words.

To prepare word ladders, print out on card stock, hole punch and then put them on a ring.

To use these word ladders, the teacher reads the words aloud to the students starting at the bottom and going up the ladder. Most words can be made with the students changing just one letter to make the next word. (For example, “make the word mop. Now change mop to map.” ) However, in a few cases they might have to change two letters.

Students can build the words with magnetic letters, or letter tiles with sound boxes. Students could write the words with dry erase markers on word mats. I have also included a worksheet that can be used like a spelling test. Students first build the word, write the word. Then after all 10 words have been made, fold the paper and read the list again.
