Great Ideas for Poetry Month

Teaching poetry to elementary school-aged students can be a challenging task, but it can also be an incredibly rewarding experience. Poetry can help children develop their reading and writing skills, encourage creativity and self-expression, and build a deeper appreciation for language and literature. Here are some tips for teaching poetry to elementary school-aged students:

Choose age-appropriate poems: When selecting poems to share with your students, it is important to choose pieces that are appropriate for their age and reading level. Poems with simple vocabulary, repetition, and rhyme are great for younger students, while older students can handle more complex language and themes. Here are some of my favorite poetry books to share with students:

Use visuals: Many students respond well to visual aids, so consider incorporating pictures, illustrations, or videos that relate to the poem. This can help students better understand the meaning and imagery in the poem, and it can also make the learning experience more engaging.

Encourage creativity: Poetry is a form of creative expression, so encourage your students to write their own poems. Give them prompts or templates to work with, and allow them to explore their own thoughts and feelings through their writing. This can help them build confidence in their writing abilities and develop their own unique voice. Keeping a poetry notebook is a great idea.

Connect poetry to real life: Help your students see the relevance of poetry in their own lives by connecting it to real-world situations or events. For example, you could read poems about nature before taking a class field trip to a park or forest, or you could read poems about friendship or family before encouraging students to write their own poems about people in their lives.
